Packaging Review: Package Design

February 1st, 2012

The first segment of the lifecycle is the Package Design Phase. The best time to consider Package Design can depend on your type of manufacturing process and your product. Design challenges can be overcome by involving your packaging vendor during the early product development phase. For the purposes of this webinar, we’ll break down manufacturers into three types.

NEXT SLIDE

A “type one” packaging operation would include products that are produced in daily larger quantities rolling off an assembly line like bottling or semiconductors.  The time to address your packaging should be prior to any manufacturing. Treat the packaging as part of the product rather than an afterthought. If your product is moved, handled, or staged during production, it may be cost effective to incorporate the packaging into your process as a function of material handling.

A “type two” packaging operation may be a product that is larger dimensionally, and the thru put time could range from a week to months like machinery or computerized manufacturing equipment. The product’s design may be the same or vary to customer requirements, but would generally ship assembled with few ancillary packages.  The time to address your packaging should be during the product production phase, in order to avoid shipping delays.

A “type three” packaging operation is similar to a type two but may be more customized, like custom conveyor systems or whole production lines. Packaging designs are usually addressed once the product is completed as the product may undergo last minute modifications and possible dis-assembly due to various shipping challenges.

NEXT SLIDE

In a case study put together by Valley Box we take a look at a type 3 customer. This Aircraft Company manufactures large and heavy milled rings, which require off-site machining by a sub-contractor, who then ships the rings back to the point of origin.

Valley box suggested a reusable box rather than a one-way shipper. The reusable features provided long-term durability and included steel, hardware, waterproofing, and an attached loading ramp.

Assuming a performance lifespan of at least 5 years, the savings of this reusable package design out weighed the cost of replacing each one-way shipper. Other benefits included expedited round-robin shipments, and reduced packaging waste associated with one-way shippers.

NEXT SLIDE

Why does it matter to have a plan prior to shipment? Well if you are utilizing international sea containers or freight trucking, designing packaging to optimize the payload can dramatically reduce the cost.
By implementing a packaging plan in advance,  you can load a higher value of goods while the freight charges remain constant. When voids of space occur within the load, blocking and bracing is necessary to avoid load shifting that can potentially destroy the contents. By creating a packaging configuration that best utilizes the internal dimensions of the containers, labor & materials for such blocking and bracing are greatly reduced.

NEXT SLIDE

Here is another case study for a Parts Machining Manufacturer who needed to optimize the outside dimensions of their wood boxes, in order to efficiently pack their overseas shipping container. Valley Box designed heat treated wood boxes that held the maximum amount of parts while not exceeding the maximum dimensions. Additionally this method saved time during loading and unloading by eliminating blocking and bracing needs.

NEXT SLIDE

There are many types of packaging materials to choose from, it’s important to understand the differences of each material.

  • Corrugated boxes, Single wall and double wall boxes are good for a Type 1 company who have a higher rate of usage and buy in large repetitive quantities.
  • Triple Wall is a triple fluted corrugated box. This material is a light weight tough, rugged material that works well for air freight or when the cost of freight is weight sensitive. Since it is fiber board,  triple wall may not be desirable for long term outdoor storage. A similar sized standard wood container could weigh nearly 40% more impacting your freight costs.
  • Wood Crates are lightweight and can potentially offer a more economic outer package than its paneled wood box counterpart. It can be a cost effective choice when determining the level of protection your product really needs.
  • Light & Heavy Duty Boxes – Are perfect for the Type 2 & 3 Manufacturer. They are durable and customizable to your product. These styles of boxes can be built to hold payloads of any size and weight.

NEXT SLIDE

When discussing the package design with your vendor, addressing the method of closure and end customer opening is vital. How you close the package determines how it will be opened.

This can impact the end user in that tools and manpower may be needed. If an end user sustains an injury attempting to open your package, this not only becomes a potential liability to you, but could alter the perception of Your Products Quality.

There are many ways to secure a package. Some methods like strapping require specific tools. All tapes can be applied easily, and stretch wrap is quick at securing palleted stacks of products.

Discuss what is most cost effective with appropriate performance levels with your supplier.

3 million trees planted each day

January 26th, 2012

The forest products industry, which comprises about 15 percent of forestland ownership, is responsible for 41 percent of all replanted forest acreage. That works out to more than 1 billion trees a year, or about 3 million trees planted every day. Trees flourish in Canada as well, where forests cover half of the land mass and the replanting record continues to be strong.

Valley Box encourages Green habits and behaviors, and thinks its truly remarkable how many trees are planted on a daily bases. Valley Box’s wood vendors all adhere to SFI & FSC certifications.

Valley Box Supports the Local High School Sports Association

December 29th, 2011

Valley Box is proud to support Sports Boosters Winter 2010-2011 enriching the lives of student athletes. The Sports Boosters mission is simple “to help High Schools throughout the country significantly supplement their athletic/activities budgets”.

Organized sports are an essential tool for children to learn, grow, and prepare for life. Children, who probably don’t yet realize the mental and physical discipline they’ll endure with gritted teeth that, will be better prepared to become citizens and leaders of our communities. High School is a proving ground fraught with all sorts of difficulties, from raging hormones and peer pressure to the searing uncertainty of a world that seldom offers our sons and daughters a clear or hopeful path into the future. One only needs to turn on any of the dozen or so “all sports channels” for a moment to understand that the banner of winning at all cost is flying high. Winning is certainly more fun than losing, but the willingness and the ability to instill in young athletes the true value of simply doing their best under any circumstances is the rarest and most valuable lesson. The legendary Vince Lombardi once said, “Winning isn’t everything, but the will to win is everything.” When a single student athlete is instilled with this principle then a positive impact is made to the team, their school, their community and our society. And ultimately isn’t that the primary purpose of High School athletics?

Valley Box Company Supports the San Diego Santee Santas with Box Donation

December 8th, 2011

Non-profit Group in its 58th Year of Giving Back to the Community

SANTEE, CA — December 5, 2011 — It’s that time of year again when the Santee Santas’ collections boxes are distributed at locations around Santee County. Click this link to see a list of locations.  “Valley Box has been donating to the Santee Santas since 2003 and will continue to donate hundreds of boxes for this caring, giving organization,” states Connie Lares, Operations Manager for Valley Box. This year Valley Box has donated over one thousand corrugated boxes for collection and distribution efforts to bring the Spirit of Christmas to the less fortunate members of the Santee community.

About the Santee Santas

The Santee Santas Foundation is a local, nonprofit 501 (c) (3) all-volunteer organization that provides struggling families with toys, food and monetary assistance. Santee Santas was established in 1953 by Margaret Ness and Charles Skidmore, Superintendent of the Santee School District. Other key supporters were Perry Shipman, Gelene Harritt and John and Ruth Northcote. The first year four or five families were served, delivery was made by firetruck and Santee was mainly farm and dairy land. The Santee School was the only school, with about 200 students.

The Santee School District assumed the responsibility for coordinating the program until 1985. At that time the school district decided that it should assume a smaller role in the administration of the program and encouraged the establishment of a volunteer organization. Today, Santee Santas has 100s of volunteers and a board of directors consisting of nine members.

Santee Santas current programs include:

Holiday Food & Toy Drive – Each year a food drive is organized through our local elementary and high schools to bring some holiday cheer to struggling families. With the generous support of local businesses, nonprofit organizations and volunteers alike, food and toys are collected, sorted, boxed, (toys are wrapped) and delivered to Santee families in need each December. In 2011, Santee Santas served over 300 families during the holidays, including 385 children.

Senior Outreach – Seniors who are alone or reside in our nursing home, Stanford Court, are remembered with flowers and gifts during the holidays.

Emergency Fund – This special fund is available to assist families in crisis throughout the year.
